Innospace, Manchester Metropolitan University's business incubator for pre-start and early stage businesses supported 34 new businesses at its 12th Business Start Up Boot Camp on 3rd-4th November 2017. This free two day event is open to any MMU student, graduate, member of staff, graduates from other universities or Innospace licensee who have a business idea that they want to develop. The aim of the Boot Camp is to get the businesses trading after six months and we have a 60-70% success rate.
The Boot Camp started running in 2012 and has changed according to participants feedback over the years. There has been a core team working on the programme since 2013 with new speakers and mentors joining the group at every event. The intensive programme is designed to give the participants all of the building blocks they need to start a business along with support, mentoring, advice, networking opportunities and resources.
The programme covers topics including business basics - company structure, tax, accounts, branding, marketing, finance and funding, legal and intellectual property. We start the programme with an icebreaker called Self Belief and Self Confidence which is designed to take participants out of their comfort zone before they are asked to do a one minute pitch in front of their peers.
We have supported over 300 businesses during the Boot Camp's from a variety of different sectors from equine care, makeup artists and fashion designers to web developers, health and food businesses.
We finished the first day with an inspirational keynote speaker, this year's speaker was former Boot Camper and restaurateur, Richard Brown from Beastro. Richard shared his entrepreneurial journey with the participants and spoke about howBeastro was formed. Richard entered Allied London's street food start up competition at The Kitchens in Spinningfields with his business partners, James and Heather Taylor. After 12 months of trading they were crowned champions and won the developer's backing to beef up their side of the Left Bank canteen into a permanent new restaurant, Beastro.
The 13th Business Start Up Boot Camp will take place on Friday 1st - Saturday 2nd June 2018. To register your interest and request an application form, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
