A NEW report, produced by Funding Enterprise, outlines the key challenges regarding corporate finance in the post-recession economy in the North West of the UK. Findings include the drop of availability of debt financing for early stage companies, differing definitions of the “funding gap” and different views on the availability of capital. Overall, the literature suggests that such a gap does exist. The project team used primary research to query early stage businesses, investors and finance experts on contemporary and post-recession issues on the difficulties that early-stage businesses face when seeking finance, and how this landscape can improve. The study touches upon the importance of networking, difficulties to demonstrate market opportunity, lack of ambition to achieve large scale, and a misbalance of power in investor-client relationships. Funding Enterprise has developed an investment readiness assessment tool on the back of this research.
