Discover what type of work experience is best for you and how to make your perfect sandwich (year). Find out about studying abroad, turn your side hustle into a business or try out a year in your dream job or industry. This is aimed at first year students; find out if a sandwich year is for you and if it isn’t, no problem, we’ve got plenty of other options for you!

Rise at Manchester Met are partnering with the Careers & Employability Service to provide a series of sessions over 2 weeks.
Part 1 is for everyone
Meet other students, share your experience while you find out about sandwich years, alternative options and build your confidence. We’ll introduce you to enterprise skills, employers and MMU graduates that have been in your shoes! You will also get to hear from special guest speakers who are experts in employability, including Stef Sword-Williams from F*ck Being Humble. Stef is one of Forbes Magazine’s Top 30 under 30 in Europe. Some of these sessions will include tasks for you to complete that will help you better understand your skills, your values and how these inform your sandwich choices (no pickles on mine!)
At the end of the week you will work with a mentor or coach to choose your options for part 2.
Part 2 is specialised – You choose:
In part 2 you will learn specific skills to make sure you have everything you need to have the sandwich year you want!
-Work Experience – we have options for creative jobs as well business/ industry! Learn how to ace any job application, build a killer LinkedIn profile, understand what recruiters are looking for and practice interview techniques in an online assessment centre. You will receive feedback on your assessment centre so you leave this week knowing what you do well and what you might want to improve on over the summer.
-Study Abroad – fancy a year in the sun? we can’t guarantee the weather but if you want to spend your sandwich immersed in another culture, learning a new language and making friends from all over the world, we will help you learn how to find your ideal study abroad including finding opportunity providers, successfully applying for opportunities and how to prepare for your year abroad.
-“New Directions” – Learn more about freelancing and starting up from our experts and alumni. Learn how to form an idea, the skills you need to thrive in self-employment and turn your idea into a viable business plan. At the end of the week you can choose to develop your ideas through your 2nd year and gain access to the RISE Business Start-up Bootcamp and a chance to win a bursary to support your self-employed sandwich year.
